Solid Wood Bedside Tables: What to Choose for Small UK Bedrooms (UK Guide for Real Homes)

Updated: Apr 22

Why Opt for a Handmade Solid Wood Bedside Table?

If you’ve ever bought a bedside table that looked good online but felt flimsy in real life, you’re not alone.

A lot of what’s sold in the UK now is MDF or flat-pack. It does the job short-term, but it doesn’t last.

At Woodenify, we make solid wood bedside tables in our Yorkshire workshop using Scandinavian redwood.

No panels, no shortcuts. Furniture made to measure that fits.

This guide isn’t about trends. It’s about what actually works in real homes — especially smaller UK bedrooms.

1. WHAT MAKES SOLID WOOD DIFFERENT?

It’s heavier — and that’s a good thing...

A proper solid wood bedside table doesn’t wobble when you put a lamp or a drink on it.

Ours are made from kiln-dried redwood (under 10% moisture), which means:

  • less movement over time

  • no warping like cheap boards

  • proper weight and stability

You’ll notice it straight away when you lift it.

No MDF, no hollow panels

A lot of bedside tables today are:

  • hollow inside

  • covered in veneer

  • prone to swelling if they get damp

We don’t use any of that.

Everything is real wood, planed smooth but still with natural grain, knots and small imperfections.

Honest note: You might see slight variations between pieces. That’s normal with real timber.

2. WHY SIZE MATTERS IN UK BEDROOMS? REAL SIZES WE MAKE (AND WHAT THEY’RE LIKE IN A ROOM)

Most UK homes don’t have space to waste.

Especially:

  • terraces

  • new builds

  • box rooms

It’s one of the first questions we get — “will it actually fit?”

Most UK bedrooms and hallways are tighter than people expect, so we keep our sizes practical rather than oversized.

Standard dimensions:

  • Widths: 15 cm up to 45 cm

  • Height: 50 cm to 90 cm

  • Depth: 22 cm (kept consistent so it doesn’t stick out too far)

Our wooden units are designed to sit comfortably:

  • next to beds

  • beside radiators

  • in narrow gaps (stairs, alcoves, corners)

WOOD THICKNESS (THIS MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE)

We use solid Scandinavian redwood in two main thicknesses:

  • 32 mm (most common)

  • 38 mm (chunkier, heavier feel)

Solid wood boards available in 32mm or 38mm thickness, with 27mm available on request. Thickness affects both the look and the internal space.

What that means in practice:

  • 32 mm → slightly lighter look, still solid and stable

  • 38 mm → thicker edges, feels more substantial

Important: Thickness affects the internal space, not just how it looks.

One of our common setups:

  • Width: 45 cm

  • Height: 75 cm

  • Depth: 22 cm

  • Wood thickness: 32 mm

This works well as a:

  • bedside table

  • small display unit

  • plant stand

  • small bookcase

  • side table

Small wooden shelf by stairs holds a wooden organizer and pink box. Coats hang beside it. Grey walls and wooden floor create a cozy vibe.

INTERNAL SPACE

This is something people don’t always realise:

With thicker wood, the inside space becomes smaller.

Example:

  • For the 20 cm wide option (38 mm wood)

👉 internal shelf space is around 12 cm

So it’s great for:

  • books

  • small baskets

  • chargers

But not ideal for:

  • larger storage boxes

WHERE THESE WORK BEST (REAL HOMES)

Most customers use them in places where standard furniture doesn’t fit:

✔ Next to beds

  • especially where space is limited

  • narrow width options (20–30 cm) are popular

Used properly — lamp, book, charger. No wasted space.

✔ In hallways / near stairs

  • fits into awkward gaps

  • doesn’t block walking space

A narrower option (around 15–25 cm wide) works well in tighter spaces like box rooms or terraces.

✔ As plant stands

  • solid wood handles weight well

  • looks natural, not bulky

Used as a plant stand — solid wood handles the weight easily without wobbling.

✔ Media or display units

  • vinyl players

  • small speakers

  • décor pieces

✔ Bathroom Storage

  • vinyl players

  • small speakers

  • décor pieces

Used for bathroom storage — slim enough to fit next to the sink without taking up too much space.

✔ As sofa side tables

  • A common one — placed next to a sofa for a drink, book, or remote.

  • Narrow enough not to get in the way.

COMBINING WITH OTHER PIECES (WHAT WORKS WELL)

👉 This is where combining products works well:

WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND

A few honest points before choosing:

  • 22 cm depth is intentional — anything deeper starts to feel bulky in smaller rooms

  • narrower units mean less internal storage

  • solid wood = slight variation in grain and tone

  • thicker wood = less internal space but more weight

QUICK TIP (FROM EXPERIENCE)

If you’re unsure:

  • go narrower (20–30 cm) for tight spaces

  • go wider (30–45 cm) if you need proper surface use

Most people regret going too big — almost never too small.
