Real rustic wedding crate ideas (simple setups that work)
Wooden crates are one of those wedding items that look nice, but also do a proper job.
They can hold signs, drinks, cards, flowers, favours, blankets and even cake displays. For rustic weddings, barn weddings and small UK venues, they are especially useful because they work in tight corners and uneven spaces.
At Woodenify, we sell rustic wooden crates and boxes solid Scandinavian redwood. No MDF. No flat-pack panels. Just proper wooden crates that can be used on the day and kept afterwards for home storage.
Solid wood crates are useful for more than decoration — they help organise awkward wedding spaces too. Which would you go for — natural wood, burnt effect, or washed grey?
WHY WOODEN CRATES WORK SO WELL FOR RUSTIC WEDDINGS
A lot of UK wedding venues are beautiful, but not always easy to set up.
Barns can have uneven floors. Village halls can be narrow. Marquees often need extra display space. Some venues give you one small table and expect you to make it work.
This is where wooden crates help.
They can be stacked, turned sideways, used as a low table, or placed under signs to add height. They are also easy to move around during the day if the layout changes.

USE WOODEN CRATES FOR YOUR WEDDING WELCOME SIGN
A welcome sign often looks better when it has a bit of height behind it.
A simple setup is:
2 or 3 wooden crates stacked together
A framed welcome sign on top
A few flowers, candles or greenery around the base
Our common crate size of around 50 × 40 × 30 cm works well for this. It gives enough height without making the display feel too tall.
Honest note:
If your wedding is outside, or in a barn with uneven flooring, test the crates before guests arrive. A small wedge or rubber pad under one corner can make a big difference.

CREATE A WEDDING TABLE PLAN DISPLAY
Table plans can be awkward. Easels look nice, but they can wobble if guests brush past them.
Wooden crates give you a wider base.
You can use:
3 crates for a small wedding
5 or more crates for a larger guest list
A mix of upright and sideways crates for extra height
For bigger weddings, wider crates around 60 cm wide are usually easier to work with. They give you more space for cards, flowers or small frames.

USE A CRATE AS A WEDDING CARD BOX
A wooden crate can work well as a simple card and gift area.
You can use one crate on a table, or stack two crates to make a small station.
A crate also feels less “single use” than a card box. After the wedding, it can be used at home for blankets, shoes, toys, plants or hallway storage.
Practical tip:
Do not place the card crate right by the exit. Keep it somewhere visible, but slightly inside the room.

BUILD A RUSTIC DRINKS STATION
Crates are useful for drinks because they add height without needing another table.
You can use them for:
soft drinks
bottled water
prosecco
glassware
small signs
napkins
For safety, keep the stack low. Around 2 to 3 crates high is usually enough.
If you want a flat serving surface, place a solid board across the top. This stops glasses wobbling between crate slats.

Take a look at these matching rustic wooden shelves — simple, solid, and made to sit together properly.
USE CRATES FOR WEDDING FAVOURS
Favours often end up scattered across tables. Crates keep them together and make them easier for guests to see.
They work well for:
small jars
candles
seed packets
mini bottles
wrapped sweets
handmade soap

Turn the crate on its side if you want it to work like a small shelf.
MAKE A CAKE DISPLAY WITH WOODEN CRATES
A wooden crate cake display can look lovely, but it needs to be done properly.
Use crates to create height around the cake, not necessarily directly under the cake unless everything is completely level.
A safer setup is:
cake on a proper board or table
wooden crates around it for flowers, cupcakes or signs
one crate used underneath only if the surface is flat and stable
Honest note:
Do not risk a heavy cake on an uneven crate stack. Test it before the day.

CREATE A PHOTO OR MEMORY CORNER
Crates are lovely for old family photos, candles and small keepsakes.
Turn them sideways and use the inside like a small display shelf.
This works well in narrow UK venues because you can build upwards rather than using a wide table.

If you’re working with a smaller venue or tight layout, it’s worth thinking about how you’ll use the space properly. We’ve covered a few simple ideas in our guide to small space storage in UK homes: Small Space Storage Ideas for UK Homes
WHAT SIZE WOODEN CRATES WORK BEST FOR WEDDINGS?
Here’s a simple guide with dimensions for some of our crates.
50 × 40 × 30 cm Best all-round size. Good for welcome signs, card stations and displays.
60 × 40 × 23 cm Better for table plans and larger displays.
33 × 37 × 33 cm Good for smaller spaces, shelves, favours and compact displays.
30 × 30 × 60 cm Useful when you want height without taking up too much floor space.
Before ordering, measure your venue space. It sounds obvious, but it saves problems later.
Also check transport. Several crates can fit in a normal car, but larger stacks may need planning.

WHAT TO AVOID WITH WEDDING CRATE DISPLAYS
A few honest points from making and selling crates:
Do not stack them too high where guests will walk past.
Do not overload the top crate with glass bottles or heavy decorations.
Do not use very thin lightweight crates for drinks or cake displays.
Do not forget about uneven floors in barns, marquees and old buildings.
Do not cover the whole crate with fabric if you want the rustic wood to show.
Simple usually looks better.
WHY CHOOSE WOODENIFY CRATES?
ur crates are made from new, solid pine wood (Scandinavian redwood).
They’re slightly sanded so they feel smooth enough for home use, while still keeping that natural look. You’ll see knots, grain and small marks — that’s just real wood doing what it does.
We don’t use MDF or thin panels.
Unlike some cheaper options, our crates are clean timber — no dirt, no old residues, and guaranteed no woodworm.
All of our stock is based here in the UK, so you’re not waiting weeks for crates to arrive from abroad.
We’re a real workshop in West Yorkshire, so collection is possible if you’d prefer to see them before ordering.
Our crates are made to be used on your wedding day and then reused at home afterwards.
Customers often reuse them for:
hallway shoes
living room blankets
bathroom storage
plants
children’s toys
kitchen storage
bedside tables

FAQ section
Can I use wooden crates outside at a wedding?
Yes, but keep them dry where possible. Real wood can mark or move slightly if left in wet grass or rain. If your wedding is outside, place crates on a dry surface or mat.
Are wooden crates strong enough for bottles?
Yes, solid wood crates are suitable for drinks displays, but keep stacks low and stable. Do not build tall towers where guests are walking past.
Can I use crates as a cake stand?
Only if the surface is flat, level and properly tested. For heavy cakes, it is safer to use crates around the cake rather than directly underneath it.
Can I reuse the crates after the wedding?
Yes. Most customers use them afterwards for home storage, hallway shoes, blankets, toys, plants or shelves.
Do Woodenify crates arrive assembled?
Yes. Our crates are handmade and arrive ready to use. No flat-pack panels.
PLANNING A RUSTIC WEDDING?
Start with the practical bits first.
Think about where guests arrive, where cards go, where drinks will be served, and where your table plan will sit. Wooden crates can help with all of that without needing lots of extra furniture.
